Frequently Asked Questions

What can I expect in the first few sessions?
In the first few sessions, I want to learn about what pulled you to call, whether it’s a current crisis or just a feeling of being stuck. If you are experiencing a crisis requiring immediate attention, we’ll start with stabilizing until you are feeling grounded enough to dig a bit deeper. Think of it this way: you can’t watch a roof while the storm is still raging. Sometimes we have to address the immediate chaos before implementing long-term fixes. If you aren’t experiencing an immediate crisis, or are just feeling stuck, we will begin with comprehensive history-taking and identifying potential areas of focus for our work together. From there, we’ll begin the process of exploring how your earlier experiences are impacting you today, and how we can begin to make shifts that align with your values and goals.

How long will it take for me to see the results I want?
While I wish I could give a short answer on this, but there is no way to know. Some people experience relief in the first session just from sharing their story and envisioning a path forward. However, it might feel more difficult before it feels easier. Creating change is entirely possible, but it is hard. In growing towards clarity and acceptance while distancing from your current “numbing vices” (whether it’s substances, excessive Tiktok scrolling, overworking, or trying to control outcomes), you will begin to face discomfort that has previously been avoided. Healing isn’t linear, but my role is to create safety as we move through these challenges.

What if I need something other than therapy?
I believe in practicing with transparency about what my areas of expertise are, and where my clinical limits are. If someone needs a higher level of care than what I can provide in talk therapy, I will help you find the appropriate type of treatment. If you are experiencing challenges outside of my scope, I can refer you to someone with training and experience suited to your needs. I maintain relationships with a variety of providers and programs across the nation to ensure I can provide the best referrals possible.

What if I have trouble connecting with therapists?
Therapy is a unique dynamic with specific boundaries and purpose, but at its core, it is still a relationship between two individuals. That means it could take time to feel comfortable opening up, and there may be moments of disconnection along the way. I brings years of experience and training to session, but I understand that I cannot be the clinician for everyone—and that is okay! As a relational therapist, I lean into the therapeutic alliance as a tool for interpersonal growth and change. If you’re not feeling connected to the process, let’s talk about it! It may mean there are different approaches we can try, or an opportunity to revisit the treatment goals. How we show up in therapy often mirrors how we show up in life, so talking openly about what’s happening in session can yield powerful moments of understanding both in and out of the session. Ultimately, my goal is to make sure every client is getting what they need out of therapy, whether that is with me or someone else who can best work with a client. If ever a client determines they are not getting their needs met in the space, I am happy to work with them to find a better fit that allows them to meet their goals.
